Music for Education & Wellbeing podcast

Music for education & wellbeing podcast – with JB Rose, recording artist, vocal tutor and singing vegan mum

In this new podcast, Anita Holford, co-editor of Music Education Works, is talking with JB Rose who is a soul vocalist, recording artist, and vocal tutor at three charities (Heart and Soul, Clean Break Theatre Company and Second Wave Youth Arts where she’s also an Associate Director). JB has supported Chaka Khan, and worked with the likes of Coolio, Omar and Junior.  Alongside all of this she also has an impressive scriptwriting and songwriting career. I was particularly interested in her beginnings in youth arts, and the difference that’s made to her progression into the music industry.

We talk about:

  • JB’s beginnings in youth arts at the Albany Deptford, Second Wave YouthTheatre and Lewisham Academy of music (now called Midi Music)
  • How she thrived in an environment where young people mixed with professional musicians informally
  • The value of having a network of peers to support each other into their professional lives
  • The natural progression in youth organisations from participant, to tutor/mentor, to formal qualifications
  • How she built a portfolio career and training from the age of 18 involving youth music/arts, script writing and songwriting, session work as a musician and running a theatre/comedy company
  • The impact that starting in youth arts has had on the way she works, collaborates, and passes on her skills
